A draftsman has the task of implementing the specifications of architects and engineers. This means that he/she implements the architects' sketches and the engineers' calculations using the CAD program. CAD stands for Computer Aided Design and is used to create or change a model with computer assistance.
When practicing the profession, there are a total of three different main areas of activity:
Architectural draftsman for an engineering office (In this case, construction drawings are prepared and statistical calculations are carried out)
Draftsman for architecture (Here, draftsmen plan structural engineering buildings and are also involved in their execution)
Job candidate with a focus on civil engineering (Anyone who is interested in this area of activity will gain insights into the areas of civil engineering, road construction and landscape construction.)
A specific school education is not absolutely necessary, but according to the employment agency, industrial companies tend to employ trainees with a university entrance qualification, while craft businesses tend to employ trainees with intermediate educational qualifications.
According to the IHK, the training teaches, among other things, the following:
Drawing techniques (execute basic geometric constructions; create freehand drawings; create vanishing point perspectives; but also differentiate and handle surveying equipment and use evaluation software; and much more)
Architecture (creating design drawings and construction drawings; preparing position plans; assessing building elements according to their properties and incorporating them into construction documents, and much more)
The salary changes depending on which industry you work in. In the construction industry you earn almost up to €200 more than in engineering offices.
